  • Who can become a hospital volunteer?

    i. High School Students during the Summer Program
    ii. Any one over the age of 18 can volunteer year-round.  

  • I want to job shadow, complete an internship or need "hands on" hours for a certification.
    Where can I volunteer?

    Job Shadowing, internships or fellowships are all handled you re the department of Human Resources. Please email unpaidexperiences@uchc.edu.
  • Do I need prior healthcare experience to volunteer?

    No. Volunteers receive training for their assigned roles. Many roles are designed for individuals without prior healthcare experience.
  • How do I apply to become a volunteer and how long does it take?

    Prospective volunteers must complete the following steps:
    1. Complete an Initial Application
    2. Demographics Form
    3. Background Check
    4. Occupational Health Clearance
    5. Vaccination Confirmation
    6. Obtain a Badge and Parking Permit
    7. Complete Required Online Self-Training
    8. Complete In-Person Volunteer Orientation
    9. Attest to Completion of Trainings and Reviewing the Volunteer Handbook

    Our onboarding process takes about one month. Please know orientation is required for all new volunteers and is schedules once per month. If orientation is missed this may prolong your onboarding process.  

  • What health requirements are needed?

    Volunteers must schedule an occupational health appointment and provide proof of immunizations, a TB screening, and seasonal flu shots. If you do not have proof of vaccinations or medical records, our Occupational Health Department can help you schedule an appointment for bloodwork. Initial covid vaccination is required, however boosters are not.Participation ins our flu vaccination program is a requirement, this includes recieving a vaccination or applying for a waiver. If no vaccine is recieved you must either wear a mask at all times while on campus, or take a leave of absence through flu season.
  • What is the minimum time commitment?

    We ask that any volunteer over the age of 18 volunteer for at least 50 hours per year. We ask for a 4 hour shift per week.
  • Can I request a specific department?

    Volunteers may express preferences, and placements are made based on skills, availability, and departmental needs. Please note family may not volunteer within the same department as an employee or other volunteer.
  • Can I earn service hours or documentation?

    Absolutely! We ask that volunteers have at least 100 hours of service before letters will be provided. You can always check how many hours you have volunteered through our online portal.
